Relight The Flame
Veterans Memorial Park
William G. Milliken State Park is Michigan’s first urban State Park and is considered a green oasis in the heart of the city of Detroit. The initial goal of the “RELIGHT THE FLAME” campaign is to raise $400,000, which the DNR set as a launching point for further development of the site allocated to place the Memorial. More funds will have to be raised for maintenance and upkeep after the Memorial is restored.

Michigan War Veterans Memorial Support needed for relocation
The current location of the Michigan War Veterans Memorial is on the southwest corner of the old Michigan State Fairgrounds. When the State cut off funding for the State Fair in 2010, the Memorial and its upkeep were abandoned.
Dedicated in 1939 through the efforts of World War I Veterans, city and state officials, and patriotic citizens throughout the state of Michigan. When completed, the Memorial was a stone tower, 35 feet high, with plaques and memorials contributed by Michigan and Canadian Veteran Service Organizations.
241 plaques were on the wall in 2013, representing VSO’s, cities, and counties across Michigan and neighboring Canada.

At the dedication ceremonies held in September 1939, speakers emphasized that the Michigan War Veterans Memorial was meant as a tribute to Michigan’s war dead in every engagement since the Civil War.
An eternal flame was placed on top of the Memorial to burn 24 x 7 to honor the memories of all Michigan Veterans of all wars and conflicts and as a reminder for future generations of the sacrifices made by Michiganders to keep America free.
