Thomas Emmons Gavle | Vietnam Veterans of America, Detroit Chapter 9

May 6, 1946 – June 22, 2026

It is with deep sadness that Vietnam Veterans of America Detroit Chapter 9 remembers Thomas Emmons Gavle, a longtime Life Member and one of the chapter’s earliest members, who passed away on June 22, 2026, at the age of 80, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born on May 6, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, to Aaron Marcellus Gavle and Mary Esther Emmons, Tom graduated from Dearborn High School in 1964. He went on to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era, earning the Bronze Star for his military service.

Tom was part of Chapter 9’s history dating back to its early days, when the organization was still known as Vietnam Veterans of Michigan. Throughout his many years of membership, he remained committed to supporting his fellow veterans, particularly through his advocacy for improved Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) services and resources. His dedication reflected a genuine concern for the challenges veterans face long after their military service has ended.

Outside of his military service and veterans’ advocacy, Tom built a 30-year career with Norfolk Southern Railway, working as a switchman. He was also a member of Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church, where he married the love of his life, Dolores Antoinette “Lorie” Lewandowski, on November 8, 1986.

Tom’s connection to his Chapter 9 family remained strong throughout his life. During a visit to Tom and Lorie’s home in Brooklyn, Michigan, a fellow chapter member had the honor of presenting him with the 50-Year Vietnam Veteran commemorative pin, recognizing his service and sacrifice. It was a meaningful moment of appreciation for a veteran who had given so much to his country and fellow servicemen and women.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Dolores “Lorie” Gavle; stepson, Jeffrey Liss of Brooklyn; brother, Brad Gavle; and niece, Erin (Chris) Meile. He was preceded in death by his son, Martin Gavle, and his parents, Aaron and Mary Gavle.

Services will be held privately with family.

Thomas Gavle will be remembered for his military service, his longstanding dedication to Chapter 9, and his commitment to ensuring that veterans receive the care and support they deserve. His contributions to the chapter and the veterans’ community will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Tom. Thank you for your service, your friendship, and your dedication to your fellow veterans.
