Relive the Welcome Home Exhibit Honoring Vietnam Veterans of America Detroit Chapter 9 | Vietnam Veterans of America, Detroit Chapter 9

The stories of Vietnam veterans deserve to be remembered, shared, and passed down to future generations. In 2025, the Detroit Historical Museum brought those stories to life through Welcome Home: Vietnam Veterans of America Detroit Chapter #9, a special exhibit honoring the service, sacrifice, and lasting contributions of Chapter 9 and its members.

We are pleased to share videos highlighting this meaningful exhibit, offering an opportunity to revisit the experience and reflect on the history and legacy of Detroit Chapter 9.

A Look Back at Welcome Home

Displayed at the Detroit Historical Museum from June 27 through October 19, 2025, the Welcome Home exhibit highlighted the experiences of Detroit-area Vietnam veterans, from their military service and return home to their decades of advocacy and community involvement.

Through historical photographs, military artifacts, personal stories, and other displays, the exhibit helped visitors better understand the challenges Vietnam veterans faced and the important role Chapter 9 has played in supporting veterans and their families.

As Michigan’s first Vietnam Veterans of America chapter, Detroit Chapter 9 has a history rooted in veterans coming together to support one another. What began as Vietnam Veterans of Michigan eventually became Chapter 9 in 1983, building a legacy of advocacy, education, community service, and continued support for those who served.

Experience the Exhibit Through Video

For those who were unable to attend the exhibit, or for anyone who would like to revisit this special tribute, we invite you to watch the videos below.

These videos offer a chance to reflect on Chapter 9’s history, the experiences of its members, and the importance of preserving the stories of those who served.

Preserving the Legacy of Chapter 9

Although the exhibit has concluded, the history it represents remains an important part of Detroit’s veteran community.

For decades, Chapter 9 members have advocated for veterans’ healthcare, greater recognition of Agent Orange-related illnesses, educational opportunities, and assistance for veterans and their families. Their work has helped ensure that the experiences and needs of Vietnam veterans are not forgotten.

The Welcome Home exhibit provided an opportunity to recognize those contributions while helping new generations understand the sacrifices made by Vietnam veterans and the work that continued long after their military service ended.

We extend our appreciation to the Detroit Historical Museum and everyone who helped make this exhibit possible, especially those who contributed their time, stories, and efforts to preserving Chapter 9’s history.

We encourage you to watch and share these videos with fellow veterans, family members, friends, and anyone interested in learning more about Detroit’s Vietnam veteran community.
