Detroit Veterans Give Back to Those Who Serve and Protect Their Community
DETROIT, MI – October 14, 2026 – Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Detroit Chapter 9 proudly hosted a First Responder Appreciation BBQ on Wednesday, October 14, bringing together members of the Detroit Police Department and Detroit Fire Department for an afternoon of food, fellowship, and gratitude.
Held at the Chapter 9 headquarters at 2951 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, the event was an opportunity for Vietnam veterans to give back to the men and women who work tirelessly to protect Detroit’s neighborhoods, families, and businesses.
A Partnership Built on Service
Chapter 9 partnered with MISSION BBQ, a restaurant organization known for its commitment to honoring America’s military, veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders. MISSION BBQ catered the event, providing a barbecue meal as a gesture of appreciation for Detroit’s public safety professionals.
The partnership reflects the shared values of both organizations: service, patriotism, community, and respect for those who put others before themselves.
Veterans Honoring Those Who Serve
For the members of Vietnam Veterans of America Detroit Chapter 9, service to the community did not end when they took off their military uniforms.
Many Vietnam Veterans understand firsthand the sacrifices associated with serving others, making this event especially meaningful.
“Our police officers and firefighters answer the call every day, often putting their own safety at risk to protect others,” said President. “As veterans, we understand what it means to serve something greater than ourselves. This is our opportunity to simply say thank you.”
The gathering also provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships between Detroit’s veteran community and its first responders.
More Than Just a Barbecue
Beyond the food, the afternoon was about building connections, sharing stories, and reminding Detroit’s first responders that their service does not go unnoticed.
Whether serving overseas in uniform or responding to emergencies on Detroit’s streets, the commitment to protecting others is a bond that connects veterans and first responders.
Vietnam Veterans of America Detroit Chapter 9 extends its sincere appreciation to MISSION BBQ for helping make this event possible and to the Detroit Police and Fire Departments for their continued dedication to the city.
Continuing a Legacy of Service
Detroit Chapter 9 remains committed to supporting veterans, honoring military service, and giving back to the community.
Events like the First Responder Appreciation BBQ demonstrate that the spirit of service continues long after military duty ends.
From those who served our nation to those who protect our city — thank you for your service.
